I woke up with a start. I had been dreaming but I couldn’t remember what I was dreaming about. I needed a drink. I was awake now and it was going to be impossible to go back to sleep. I slipped my dress on and walked downstairs. I got a glass of water. It was after three in the morning and the house was quiet.

I looked out the glass door toward the water. There was a light like a lantern on the pier. I could see the silhouette of a man and I knew it was Eric.

I slipped out the glass door careful not to make noise. The breeze was cool enough that I crossed my arms in reaction to the goose bumps covering my skin. I made my way slowly down the pier toward Eric. I knew he had seen me because he was watching me approach.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked amused.

“No, you can’t either?” I asked watching him.

He shook his head and looked out toward the water. “I never sleep.”

“That’s not good. I don’t know how you manage to be so happy with no sleep,” I said amused.

He laughed, but it was a harsh laugh. “I am not as happy as I seem,” he said softly. The glowing light from the lantern made it hard for me to see his face.

I moved closer to him and took his hand. He stiffened a little then gently grasped my hand. He looked at me as he ran his thumb over the back of my hand. “She was just like you,” he said softly.

I knew he was talking about his wife, Laura’s mother. Neither of them talked about her. I wasn’t sure what to say now that he was talking about her. “I doubt that,” I said softly.

He looked at me and smiled. “She loved books; which was why I had the library made. I miss her.”

I felt horrible for him. Maybe that was why he liked me so much. Maybe I just reminded him of her. Maybe he wasn’t even interested in me as much as I thought. “I’m sorry. I wish I could take some of the pain away.” I meant what I said. I hated seeing him in pain. It wasn’t him. He was vibrant and confident not sad and lonely.

He moved closer to me and pressed his mouth to mine. His kiss was deep and desperate. The fear of being seen quickly slipped away when he deepened the kiss. He broke the kiss and pressed his forehead to mine. “Come with me. We need to be out of sight,” he whispered. He took my hand and led me toward the boat.

He led me onto the boat and pressed his mouth to mine again. He laid me on the lounge chair and deepened the kiss. I was lost in his kiss. I knew what we were doing was wrong and part of me wanted to stop it, but I couldn’t. He wanted me, and I wanted him.

His hand trialed up my thigh and I moaned.
